Radio Interview

Radio Interview

I had to record my radio interview with Beth Hicks twice as the first time the sound levels weren't loud enough and she waffled away from the topic 'The importance of students in Brighton'. Second time round I made sure to brief her in greater detail about what I wanted to be discussed and she re thought her answers accordingly.

Over all I think I met the brief of interviewing someone with something important to say that relates to Brighton. My scripted intro and questions lead to an informative and engaging interview that I believe would keep my listeners of 18+ interested.

Radio Interview title : 'Students In Brighton'

Topic: The Importance of students in Brighton

Interviewee: Beth Hicks

Relation to topic: Student promoter (From The University of Sussex)

An example of the questions asked :

"Do you think clubs would survive without the students from the two major universities in Brighton?"

Radio Interview editing

When editing my interview with Beth Hicks (a student promoter from the university of sussex) I had to cut a few 'Erms' from Beth's answers to make it sound more professional and the it fade in so that it sounded smooth.

Soundscape

In the end I'm pretty pleased with how my soundscape turned out . I didn't end up including the song by 'The XX' as I felt it didn't fit with the piece or reversing my sound effects as it didn't sound as good as good as I had hoped for.

If I could re-do my soundscape I would .........

  1. Pick a different video (so I could chose more abstract sounds and play around a bit more)
  2. Include a keynote sound that would run from the beginning to the end of my soundscape

Soundscape editing

I found editing my soundscape quite easy , as you can see I added layer upon layer of sound effects to create a fully fleshed out piece that sounded whole and together apposed to empty and disjointed.

For this section in my soundscape (from the above image)  I decided to use an archetypal sound of a heart beat thudding as the colour red have the connotations of : pain, love, passion and hearts. Apart from this most of my sounds are a literal interpretation of whats happening on screen.

Getting Sound effects

Sound Effects for Soundscape :)

For my soundscape I've used a few of my foley sounds however after a minute or two into editing I realised that I would need more. After checking the FX sound effects library on my mac I came to the conclusion that I should look elsewhere as it didn't have the sounds I wanted or thought I needed.

While browsing I came across this website : http://www.freesound.org/people/veevee1231/downloaded_sounds/

Freesound have a great selection and variety of sounds effects which lets me be as creative as I want !

Interview Inspiration

*My Interview Inspiration*

          http://www.welovebrighton.com/features/music-nightlife-features/best-student-nights-out/

While browsing on the web I came across this website which displayed the best places for students to go out everyday of the week. This got me thinking that if these clubs were promoting their clubs and targeting them at students then most of their profit must come from students. Even before university started I was constantly bombarded with pre planned themed nights out all over Brighton through Facebook.

Every day there is a club which students can chose to go out to.

'The XX - Intro'

When I was in class I heard this music playing and I instantly thought about how I wanted my sound to come across to the listening audience. I came up with the idea of recording my sounds and then reversing them to create the same effect my clip is making visually.

My chosen clip

The reason I chose this clip was because I believe visually it's interesting and I really think that I could do quite a bit with the sound . I was thinking of using both foley and sounds effects from the bbc library.

As mentioned in my above image, I found a piece of music that I thought could be used briefly in some aspects of my clip. Below I added a small section of the music and overlapped it with a few seconds from the youtube clip I chose.  The soundscape main focus has to be the sound but i thought this music by 'The xx' could add, create or build on the dynamic atmosphere of my overall clip.

Task - Creating my own sound

Soundwalk In Brighton

For this task I had to go out into Brighton , chose a specific place and record a few sounds on a 'Marantz Digital Audio Recorder' . Unlike the first task given to me for homework this required me to record my own sounds instead of just picking a few out from a pre-recorded selection.

A Marantz digital audio recorder kit

I  chose to record sound next to the sea front, along the pier and in the arcade ! Due to there being problems with booking equipment out (and also lack of available equipment) I had to share a Marantz with a few others which meant having to edit more of less the same sound.

My Opinion:

Even though it's short I made sure that my soundwalk sounded as if someone was walking into an arcade, this was done through recording stepping sounds and also arcade games, machine slots and lastly a game saying "games over".

If I could improve or re start this task again I would make sure I got my own kit which would result in me having my own variation of sound that would then allow me to have more to work with when it comes to editing.

Through this short task I learnt how to operate and use a Marantz and also edit it using Adobe audition !

Homework - Short Soundscape

* Task *

'Download at least 10 sounds from the BBC Sound FX library, create a short soundscape for a location of your choice, and then upload to Soundcloud for peer review'

My Process :

  • I went into BB Sound FX library with a pre set idea of wanting to find sounds that would embody a primary school playground.
  • The sounds I chose included : child murmurs , gravel scrunching, a car speading off , baby giggles, a ball being kicked , wind, a baby subtly saying 'mama' , birds tweeting and another few additional sounds of kids playing.
  • I made sure on Adobe  Audition to add a fade in at the beginning of my sounds so that everything blended in and sounded smooth/together (all one sound)  as opposed to it sounding forced and like a bunch of sounds being clumped together. I also added a fade at the end for the same reason.
  • Once I uploaded it onto Soundcloud I made sure to listen to other peoples sound and leave a comment.

On Connor's killer soundscape I wrote -

"The use of the footsteps at the beginning really builds suspense nicely to the screaming/gun shot towards the middle. Also liked how it ended with footsteps too"

His soundscape I felt really did live up to the title , even without his title I would be able to place the sounds to that of a combat scene or gun battle with innocent people being killed or scared.
